The Good. The Oscars 2012!

Oh my god. How late am I with this post???
Very bad blogger indeed, I was toying with the idea of not posting it as I was so late but seeing as debating The Oscars dresses was half the reason I wanted to start a blog in the first place I thought it seemed a bit silly not too, even though it is very, very late!

Sooooo I'm gonna say it again, I wasn't that impressed!! That being said when I was going through all the images and putting them into little "Good", "Bad" and "Meh" folders I did suddenly realise that I actually had a whole lot more in the "Good" category than anywhere else! But, and I think this is key here, I think a lot of these got into the "Good" folder because they were no real big fashion disasters or winners! There was a lot of playing it safe and safe can very often be "Good"! To be honest throughout the whole awards season no one has really gone all out, there have been lots of the same and not enough stand out dresses, well for me at least! So before I digress anymore I shall get stuck in.....

Out and out favourite of the night, and by the sounds of it everyone else's too, and that's quite strange for me as I normally end up loving the one everyone else hates! This outfit for me was the only one who even attempted to be a little bit out there, it's a cape on the red carpet for goodness sake, who would have thought it! I'm not a Gwyneth fan at all normally, she's far to smug and superior in my opinion, I mean have you seen GOOP?! And she looks very smug and superior here, but on this occasion I think she has every right, she knew damn well she was getting all the headlines in the morning!
Love the cuff bracelet too!

Now this is how to work the red carpet! Anyone who strikes a pose as well as Bret McKenzie deserves to make it onto the Good list! I just love the fact Flight of the Conchords now has an Oscar winning writer!
I will say Jermaine has always been my favourite but I am expecting big things writing wise now Bret has all this Oscar experience under his belt!!

Bret McKenzie (Picture digitalspy.co.uk)

Diane Kruger is one of my favourites and she didn't disappoint, it's funny because I thought she looked fabulous in this Calvin number, where as upon showing it to the boyfriend he deemed her to be "too thin and looks ill" to quote. Now it's made me question myself as I don't like anyone looking too thin, but I just thought she looked amazing, what does everyone else think?!  Anyway I adore the red lace balconette bra that she teamed with the dress, really think it was a good move to not wear a necklace and just let the dress and bra combo be impact full on its own, and how damn cute is that clutch?!

Diane Kruger in Calvin Klien (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Now I know a few people have been questioning the fact that her hair matched her dress so perfectly and wondering if that was a good thing or not and I totally think it was! She just looked fabulous from top to toe, the colours in the dress were sensational, if you could sum up "Autumn" in an outfit this would be it, which I know isn't great as were going into Spring, but that's what it reminds me over, really beautiful Autumnal colours and hues, and I think she rocked the hell out of that fringe.

Ellie Kemper in Armani Prive (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Loving Mr Oldman, the man is soooo dapper (although he will forever be Sirius Black in my mind!) and in bespoke Paul Smith no less! Impressive! But it's more about his lovely wife if I'm being honest! She has had a great awards season, where most people have had a really mediocre one she has pulled it out of the bag at most events. I didn't blog about the BAFTA's as I was really unimpressed by most outfits, but Alexandra looked fab there too. She just screams (in a very loudly at the top of her lungs kinda way) elegance and sophistication!

Gary Oldman in Paul Smith and Alexandra Edenborough (Picture movies.yahoo.com)

Bravo to Glen, doesn't she look good, it's been so focused on Meryl all awards season that Ms Close has been lost a little bit, but she knocked it out of the ball park with this outfit choice. She may not have won the oscar on the night but she beat Meryl hands down in the red carpet war. Some people were questioning the jacket but I think thats most of why I love the outfit! My only little tiny grievance was that I kinda wish it didn't have the train, I think it would have been even more lovely if it had just been a straight column!

I stayed up watching The Oscars red carpet live as late as I could before my eyes starting closing of their own accord and I couldn't focus anymore and luckily Jessica Chastain was one of the ones I managed to see arrive. OMG, and to be honest I don't really like that little text messaging slang abbreviation, but boy did she look good!!! She has had an interesting awards season which some random outfit choices but what a time to get it so right!  The dress is amazing, the hair just looks effortless but enviable, it just all works so well. Jealous. A lot.

I have decided to include after party outfits in the "Oscars" theme as to be fair sometimes the dresses are better there! Jordyn Blum's outfit is one of those exact things! Pretty, pretty hair, fabulous slick of red lipstick, and that great pop of colour! There was lots of talk on the tv when everyone was arriving about bright pops of colour and vivid shades, but honestly, I didn't really see much that I thought "popped" (well apart from the orangey/red hues and Im not a massive fan of those, and we have already seen the best way to wear red by Diane Kruger up at the beginning of this!). Viola Davis popped some bright green out there on the red carpet (see here), but as you shall see I didn't mention that dress anyway as I didn't know where to begin, so for me this bright splash of yellow was the best use of vivid colour anywhere!

Jordyn Blum (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Now this is a bit of a showstopper! Kate Bosworth knows how to do glamour and this outfit has glamour & glitz in bucket loads. Its just what the Oscars is all about. I love that the last time I saw a picture of her was at LFW (I promise there will be more to come on that!!) watching Burberry wearing the adorable owl print top, with billowing curls and tweed style skirt, completely rocking the Burberry A/W 2012 look (see here) and then she is next seen in this amazing creation, love the versatility! Great matte pink lips and the matching black accessories allow the little colour splashes on the dress really stand out.

Kate Bosworth in Prabal Gurung (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Now i'm probably in the minority here for 2 different reasons, 1. I did not realise that Kate here was sister to Rooney (Where have I been!) and 2. I like Kate's dress much more than Rooney's! Its the perfect princess Oscars dress, it's pink and glittery and girly. The dusky pink colour suits her complexion and skin colour so well. It's really adorable. I loved Kate playing Heath and Michelle's daughter in Brokeback, lets hope she gets to attend some awards ceremonies in her own right soon and not as her sisters plus one!

Kate Mara in Jack Guisso Couture (Picture celebmoon.com)

You gotta love a TomKat red carpet appearance! Although I don't really notice Tom in this picture as Katie is looking so damn good! Obviously couldn't let her Dawson's Creek co-star have all the red carpet attention! The dress is such a gorgeous shade of blue, offset amazingly with her skin tone, and the fringe looks great on her. It's a no brainer really that I like the dress as it's Elie Saab, but I don't normally really like Katie Holmes on the red carpet so this one is a bit of a surprise!

Katie Holmes in Elie Saab (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Soo Kristen Wiig obviously decided that this awards season her colour was beige! SAG, Golden Globes and now the Oscars! In my opinion she saved the best for last though as this is by far the best dress she has worn and it almost managed to erase the memory of the awful choker debacle at the SAG'S (see here)! I really like the fit of this and how it falls, her hair also looks the best it has done all awards season, and I love the colour of her nails! The perfect colour to match this dress.

Kristen Wiig in J Mendel (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Well, well, well I think I might be in the minority on this one (because that happens soooo rarely!) but I love this. I loved it on the Monique Lhuillier runway at NYFW Fall 2012 (see here) where it was featured in red and with a few different tweaks. I think this is a proper awards ceremony dress, its statement worthy, I do think that it may be a bit too much on Lily though it seems to swamp her a little bit, and I'm not keen on the hair, but the dress as a dress I love!

Lily Collins in Monique Lhuillier (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

As I mentioned previously I consciously tried very hard to stay awake for all of the red carpet coverage, and managed quite a lot! But one outfit I didn't need to pry my eyes open with matchsticks to see was Milla Jovovich. She was one of the first on the red carpet and she set the bar bloody high, she looked stunning in a bejewelled Elie Saab (!!) gown. She ensured maximum exposure and air time by being the first real big name to arrive and didn't get lost in the sea of nominees, clever move! My only fault: what's with the excessive blusher?!

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

This was another time when the after parties threw up a winner. This is just a beautiful example of a classic, glamourous black dress, it's traditional in its fit but the cutaway details ensure it stays really current.

Nina Dobrev in J Mendel (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Not only was she an Academy Award winner but she was also one of the best dressed of the night too.
She is a woman who knows what suits her and this dress couldn't fit any better or look any more amazing than it does. Her hair was also one of the best of the night too, she was just on winning form in every way!

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

This one is a little left field I know and I will more than likely be in the minority (although I am used to it!)
but I really like that it looked like nothing else out there, it's a great colour that suits her complexion really well and the intricate beadwork is beautiful, I can see how it wouldn't be everyones cup of tea but I like.

Olga Kurylemko (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)
Another prime example of how to work a black dress on the red carpet. Olivia Wilde really looks fabulous here. This is how you work a choker style necklace, listen up Kristen Wiig (see her SAG awards choker fashion fail here). I saw Olivia Wilde filming in Central Park when I was in NYC just before Christmas and she is as beautiful in the flash as she looks in pictures. Bitch. I'm not jealous. Promise.

Olivia Wilde (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

I love this colour, I love this dress, I love her lipstick and I love her bangles. It suits her so well and it may have got a lot of uncomplimentary comparisons to Michelle Williams mustard coloured frock from the 2006 Oscars (see it here) which I have to say is one of my favourite Oscar dresses of all time, but I think it really works for her. It was nice to see such a different colour, especially after an awards season when there hasn't been that much colour variation on show.

Rashida Jones in (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Well, I was undecided on her Elie Saab jumpsuit from the SAG awards, but I am decided on this one, I really like it, it's clear Rose Byrne likes her sequins and also likes to do things a little differently on the carpet and I like that. Never would have guessed it was a Westwood!

The Bad. The Oscars 2012

So from the good we go to the bad.....

So is this where we say goodbye to the gorgeous Stacey Keibler? She has been wonderful in the role of Clooney's "Trophy" girl for the awards season, but as history shows, they don't normally stick around much longer once that season is over. With that being said, I have not been particularly enamoured by anything she has worn, even though she does look fabulous in almost anything.  I love that being the Clooney's girl allowed her to sit front row at Marchesa, see this dress (you can see it here) and be wearing it on the red carpet 2 weeks later, fair play to the girl, who knows how long that power will last. But after all this talk I hate it. It was ok on the runway because runway shows allow for drama and decadence, here it just looked too much, far too much! George looks good though.

Stacey Keibler in Marchesa (Picture dailymail.co.uk)

I love Elie Saab, I love Berenice Bejo and I love a red head in green (I'm a red head and know that green is a colour that works!) but I didn't like this! It was too sickly sweet, I just think there were sooo many other dresses from the Elie Saab SS Collection (see my post here) that would have worked better for her than this one.

Berenice Bejo in Elie Saab (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Now this is a pretty enough dress and on some days I may have actually put it in the good category, but today wasn't one of those days and it's ended up in here! It's just rather nothingy, I'm not keen on the sequin flounces and I really don't like her hair, what has happened too it!? First time I have ever thought that Cameron looks her age.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Why, why, why?! I love Emma Stone and her quirky, sexy sass but this awards season has just not been good on the fashion front for her, in my opinion at least. I just don't understand this dress at all. Nope, don't get it, why? Why would you do it?!

Emma Stone in Chanel (glmaourmagazine.co.uk)

And I can't decide if I hate this more or less?! I know I really don't like it, and I don't like how it clashes with her hair and the carpet - do stars or stylists not think about this before they leave the house for the biggest night in the celeb calendar!? It's kind of similar to Nicole Kidman's Balenciaga from the 2007 Oscars (see it here) and everyone is comparing the two, but to be honest I think Nicole's is by far superior to this version, the dresses are actually rather different, it's just that they are both various red hues and have a bow!

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

This one disappointed me, after her amazing fashion moment at the SAG awards in that beautiful Collette Dinnigan white dress I had high hopes, and they were seriously dashed. I'm just not keen on the racer style neck or the glitter panels, but what upsets me the most is her hair! It's a beautiful colour, but it looks unfinished, like she had to rush out the door before she was ready because her car was waiting kind of thing. Oh and the smile she had on pretty much all the photos just looked really forced, and she had looked really relaxed and happy at the SAG awards - lets just pretend this didn't happen and focus on that happier time.

Judy Greer in Monique Lhuillier (Picture catwalkqueen.tv)

Now I just don't like dresses on the red carpet that look like ice skaters outfits. All that nude netting so it looks like its strapless but really it's not, I DO NOT LIKE. Why don't people just wear a really well fitting strapless dress if thats the style you want to wear! Don't get me started on the fringing at the bottom, there are to many things wrong with this dress, I could go on all night.

Kate Hudson in Versace (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Similarly to Emma Stone, I have not been over impressed with Michelle Williams choice of outfits over the previous months, and she continued the tradition at the Oscars much to my dismay. I have said before It takes quite a lot for me to like a red dress on the red carpet, so already I wasn't keen when I heard the commentary on Sunday night stating that Williams had arrived and was sporting a red number! I know she is rocking the peplum trend that is very "in" right now but there are too many layers for me, too much going on, Im not keen on the little bow or the pink clutch. When I thought I couldn't dislike it any more I then saw the back and this almost tipped me over the edge.

I think she is going to have to go a long, long way to beat the 2006 Oscar dress and I have always been a fan of her pixie crop hair cut but after looking at that 06 pic I actually miss her hair!

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton (Picture dailymail.co.uk)

I'm going to be honest, I don't ever really like Natalie Portman's red carpet choices. Everyone always raves about her and what she wears, and while she is very stunning and a fabulous actress I don't think she dresses all that well. I really don't like this, It's vintage Dior and without meaning to sound like a complete bitch I think it should have stayed as vintage and not been worn.

Natalie Portman in Dior (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Have you ever seen anyone looks more miserable to be at the Oscars than the Princess of Monaco? She looks like she would be happier anywhere else in the world. But anyway, whatever is going on there is one story and I'm talking about her dress - I don't like it, she's a princess for goodness sake surely she could of had any dress in the world ever and this is what she goes for?! Don't like the hair either, if your going to go for a quiff at least make sure your roots are better than this.

Princess of Monaco (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)
What is this?! When you have got a figure and boobs like the Hayek why the hell do you wear this to the Oscars?!

The Undecided & The Meh! The 2012 Oscars!

Now the ones that I couldn't quite make my mind up on....

Well this dress got a lot of people talking didn't it! It's like she took a leaf out of Lea Michele's book from the SAG awards and just suddenly was overcome by some outer worldly being that just forced her to stick that damn leg out all night! It's not even an attractive leg, it's bony and scrawny! The dress was quite nice really until she drew all the attention away from it and turned herself into a laughing stock, I like to imagine Aniston sat on some exotic beach somewhere with a cocktail in hand receiving this image on her cell and laughing quietly to herself.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace (Picture dailymail.co.uk)

Now I like this better than her actual awards ceremony dress, and the colour really goes with her skin tone and hair, but I still don't love it, and I also have a little issue with the way some of these new Victoria Beckham dresses fit, but thats a whole other post. Still think the hair isn't working.

Cameron Diaz in Victoria Beckham (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Now when I first saw this I hated it. But the more I have looked at it the more my opinion has changed. I quite like it now, but I hate the cut out panels on the sleeves, if it had either been full sleeves or just off the shoulder it would have worked much better for me.

J.Lo in Zuhair Murad (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Sometimes you wish you could take things back. I have said previously of Kate Beckinsale that she always looks amazing but it's always predictable, the same kind of dress and I have said it would be nice to see her in something a little different. This dress is certainly different. I don't hate it or love it either.
I think if the dress didn't have cut out panels I might actually like it. The colours in it are beautiful and her hair looks phenomenal. I don't really know what else to say.

Kate Beckinsale (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

When she walked down the red carpet I thought I loved this, after seeing it in a bit more detail I think it's just ok, she said she only chose it that morning and I think that can be seen by the fact that it doesn't fit her how a couture gown should. Like I said before I think her sister beat her hands down.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

Again, I have been back and forth on this one a few times, I think it looked much better on tv than in pictures and I loved her reasoning for wearing it, that it was elegant and beautiful but still allowed her to breath and move around like a normal person! It's a massive improvement from the SAG awards anyway.

Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)

This was my real "meh" one, I had managed to fall asleep before I saw Penelope on the red carpet but they had been discussing her dress choice for about 20 minutes prior to her arrival so I knew it was a blue organza Giorgio Armani. It's a pretty dress, but that's it, its just a bit meh, a bit bland, just not really anything to it, nothing to hate but nothing to love, she looked very regal and her hair was great - where was her best accessory though!? That gorgeous husband of hers! I'm guessing he was at home looking after their son - swoon. God she's one lucky lady!

Penelope Cruz in Giorgio Armani (Picture glamourmagazine.co.uk)
Sooo that's it for another year. Let's hope by then I will have managed to get the post up in a slightly quicker amount of time!
